Group size:

Group age:

15-16 years old

Activity duration:

40 min

Overview and objectives:

Gender equality is one of the objectives of sustainable development   set by the UN. However, can women and men be completely the  same?

The aim of activity is to encourage pupils to think about gender issues in the world, and to discuss the role of women and men in modern society, as well as the professions of women and men in the past, today and in the future.

Materials/
Equipment needed:

Teacher presentation – women and men in the world and Latvia

Video on gender equality, e.g.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjoLWvQJ1iw

Electronic blackboard

Preparation:

Prepare Google Jamboard before the lesson, on which pupils will be able to add their ideas on women's and men's occupations and their role in modern society

Tips/comments/recommendations:

In previous lessons, introduce pupils to the UN 17 Long-term Development Goals, one of which is gender equality. At the beginning of the lesson, with video materials, presentation or infographics, encourage pupils to think about gender equality.

Detailed instructions:

Pupils have already met the UN's long-term development goals in previous lessons.

Within 10 minutes, the teacher encourages students to think about what they mean to be a woman and a man. Pupils can work individually, in pairs or in groups.

Pupils on Google Jamboard  digitally “attach” glutes to their ideas – what today means to be a woman and a man.

On another blackboard, pupils share ideas – which professions are more suitable for men and what are more suitable for women.

At the end of the lesson, everyone looks together at the ideas attached to Google Jumboard, discusses and expresses their views.
